About University of Staffordshire
The University of Staffordshire is the UK’s foremost digital university, with campuses in Stoke-on-Trent, Stafford, Lichfield and HereEast in East London. Circa 20,000 students study its programmes across the globe and, as an anchor institution, it acts as a ‘catalyst for change’, changing lives locally, regionally, nationally and around the world. The UK higher education sector is evolving rapidly. An increasingly competitive student recruitment market, domestically and internationally, combined with changing student demographics, government policy and post-pandemic reverberations, makes higher education a challenging environment. The University of Staffordshire must now re-establish and re-assert itself in this changing environment, building on its track record of innovation, to ensure it delivers its mission and plays an important role in people’s futures. In recent years, the University launched its new £40m Catalyst building, opened its net zero carbon forest school and nursery, expanded the University of Staffordshire: London, and this September opens its new Student Village on the main university campus in Stoke on Trent.
The University of Staffordshire has a strong commitment to social inclusion, set out through its Access and Participation Plan, with a clear focus on widening access and improving outcomes for under-represented student groups. The University positions itself as a “catalyst for change”, driving social mobility and inclusion for its students and the communities it serves. This commitment has also been recognised in external guides, including now being ranked 2nd in England and Wales for Social Inclusion, rising from 4th place last year and is also placed 5th for the proportion of students from low participation neighbourhoods (Sunday Times / The Times Good University Guide 2026). For the third consecutive year, it was ranked 5th for first generation student participation in the Daily Mail University Guide 2026. In addition, the University is ranked 3rd in the UK for Career Prospects in the WhatUni Student Choice Awards 2025, based entirely on student feedback.
The University has been working on the delivery of the Towards 2030 Strategy, which was launched in 2022. This strategic plan, will shortly begin to be recast, taking account of the external market changes, and reflecting our next chapter. Operating in a context of hyper-competitive market dynamics and tariff pressures across the sector, the University has a solid financial footing, underpinned by strong financial management and a track record of prudent stewardship. The University continues to operate in surplus despite challenges to its student recruitment position. This next phase is about stabilising and growing income while continuing to generate a surplus, accelerating diversification and partnerships, together with building on the growth of its technical and vocational offering via apprenticeships. It is also aligning an ambitious estate masterplan with the core needs of the University community and its Strategic Plan. Now is an incredibly exciting time to be joining an innovative institution during its next phase of growth and transformation.

Leicester and Warwick Students’ Unions seek financial and legal leaders to join the board and support their strategic development as they raise the voices of thousands of students and provide dedicated and expert support during a critical time for students.
Applications close at: 9 a.m. Friday 25th October 2024
Locations: Coventry or Leicester
Time commitment: Varies between Unions but approx. 9 – 10 engagements per year
About the University of Leicester and Warwick Students’ Unions
Leicester and Warwick Unions represent over 17,000 and 30,000 students, respectively. As independent charities, they act as critical friends to their partner universities, serving as the bridge between their students and university decision-makers.
They are democratic bodies that empower students to facilitate the changes they want to see. They train and guide elected representatives who champion the needs of their peers, provide expert advice, and campaign on a variety of issues — from combatting sexual violence on campus to creating food banks and clothes swaps and improving academic standards. Following the pandemic and subsequent rise in the cost of living, their work is needed more than ever.
The Unions act as community hubs for their members. Leicester sits at the heart of student life within the city, helping students from all walks of life celebrate key milestones and cultural events.
About the roles
The trustee positions offer the chance to make a positive impact. Both Unions have secure foundations, positive working cultures and a passion to tackle the problems their students face. Leicester and Warwick Unions are developing new strategies and seek leaders who can work with young leaders — holding their executives to account, providing professional insights, and representing the charities to external stakeholders.
Who we are looking for
We are searching for individuals with financial and legal experience. Those with a financial background should be able to demonstrate an understanding of compliance and oversight, bring positive critique, and have a growth mindset.
Alternatively, legal trustees will contribute a critical perspective and legal insight to the board — understanding risk, scrutinising key decisions, and flagging potential issues.
We are looking for individuals with experience at senior or board level. You will be comfortable working alongside other senior leaders and have an approachable style — emotional intelligence and a coaching mentality are especially valued.
We welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds, and we are particularly keen to hear from candidates from Black, Asian, and other ethnic communities, as well as female leaders. However, we will assess all applicants based on skills and fit.
The time commitment varies between Unions and can be discussed via a call. The commitment includes attendance at board meetings, sub-committee meetings, and strategic planning events. Council is the University’s supreme governing body, responsible for taking all final decisions on matters of fundamental concern to the University, including our academic mission, strategic direction and financial sustainability.
The role of the Chair of Council is to promote the efficient operation of the Council, ensuring that its members work together effectively and that they, and wider stakeholders, have confidence in the procedures laid down by the University for the proper conduct of public business. Whilst previous experience of management/governance in higher education is not essential, you will have an awareness of the political, economic and social dynamics of Leicester and the East Midlands and have a commitment to the values, aims and culture of the University of Leicester.

Who we are
Keele University is an ambitious, leading university, a charity and not for profit organisation. Founded in 1949 by Lord Lindsay, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Keele has always been different from other universities – and 75 years later, we still are. Ever since our inception, we have been pushing boundaries to create an impact locally, nationally and globally. We are world renowned for the breadth of our teaching, our outstanding student experience, and our cutting-edge research tackling some of society’s most urgent problems, including ageing, global health and renewable energy. We are proud of our close-knit campus community in Staffordshire and of our strong local, regional and global connections. We embody a culture of engagement, inclusion and cohesion and this allows our staff and students to flourish and provides the skills and opportunities to thrive in an ever-changing world.
What we need – the role
There has never been a more compelling time to become a part of our Council as we deliver our strategic plan, ‘Our Future’. The plan provided Keele with an opportunity to re-state our purpose and founding commitments, as well as a road map for direction that will ensure our future success. Our ambitions are high – and the skills, breadth of experience and judgement of our Council is crucial to our continued success.
Our Council sits at the top of our decision-making structure and is collectively responsible for establishing our strategic direction, ensuring we are accountable to our stakeholders, ensuring our academic governance is effective and overseeing the management of our finances, property and general business. Our diverse Council membership comprises external Lay Members/Trustees, staff, students and our most senior executives.
As a Lay Council Member/Trustee, you will play a pivotal role in bringing independent judgement and external experience to the formulation of University strategy and policy; in providing new thinking, ideas and specialist knowledge; and in holding the University’s senior leaders to account.
Our lay members normally commit around 10 to 12 days per year to Council business. This includes attending all meetings of Council (normally five a year), the annual strategy day, which is normally in April and membership of one of the Council committees.
Why we need you
We are looking for new Lay Members to join our Council and to reflect the communities we serve. We are looking for a strong and confident communicator, with the ability to listen critically, think strategically, debate constructively and offer supportive challenge. You must show a commitment to our core values of collegiality; ambition; accountability; respect; fairness and consistency and the ability to work within a framework of collective decision-making.
You may bring professional expertise in areas that will enhance our current Council membership – for example, Higher Education, legal or national government exposure, or an entirely fresh perspective from your own experience. You may bring previous experience as a board member or trustee, but this isn’t essential.
What we can offer you
We will provide you with a programme of induction and training and a mentor to build on your existing skills and knowledge. You will have the opportunity to develop professional networks with other Council members and gain board experience at the highest level in a large and complex organisation. You will quickly be able to influence and support the future development of our University, therefore, having a major impact on our students, staff and regional communities.
In our 2022 externally led Governance Effectiveness Review, there were several elements of our governance arrangements that were deemed to be sector leading, including the positive culture of support and challenge exhibited across the Council and the ingrained appetite for continuous development and improvement.
The role is voluntary, but all reasonable expenses will be paid
