Governor

Falmouth University is seeking a new Governor, who can bring relevant strategic insight and commitment to the University’s vision of creativity and technology as drivers of the future economy. Ideal candidates will have senior experience in areas such as digital transformation, commercial growth or diversification. Experience within the creative, technology or cultural industries would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will bring strong commercial acumen, and be able to support the University’s navigation of the evolving technological landscape. They will be forward-thinking, innovative, pragmatic, and able to contribute to high-level strategic decisions. Awareness of cyber and information risk would also be helpful. While not essential, familiarity with Cornwall’s economic and civic landscape would be an advantage.

Falmouth University is a Higher Education corporation created by statute and an exempt charity, regulated by the Office for Students (OfS). The Board of Governors is the University’s highest decision-making body and is responsible for ensuring its long-term success and effective governance.

The Board’s core responsibilities include:

– Determining the educational character and mission of the University and providing oversight of its activities
– Ensuring the effective and efficient use of resources, safeguarding the solvency of the University and its assets
– Approving annual estimates of income and expenditure
– Overseeing the appointment, performance, remuneration, and – if required – suspension or dismissal of the Vice-Chancellor & Chief Executive
– Approving the overarching pay and conditions framework for all other staff

The Vice-Chancellor & Chief Executive is accountable to the Board for the strategic leadership and executive management of the University.

Falmouth’s Board is relatively small for a higher education institution, with no more than ten Independent Governors and a strong independent majority. This enables each member to make a meaningful contribution and apply their individual expertise to the opportunities and challenges facing the University. Higher education governance is distinctive in requiring Boards to oversee both corporate and academic matters, and Falmouth’s Board maintains a broad and complementary mix of skills to meet this responsibility.

Governors also act as ambassadors for the University, promoting its interests locally, nationally and internationally. Beyond formal meetings, they are invited to participate in University activities, including student shows, graduation ceremonies, celebrations and awards events, and other engagements with the wider University community.

The Board has adopted and published a Team Charter, which encapsulates the ambition, commitment and distinctive ethos of its members. The Charter sets out clear expectations for behaviours and standards of conduct across the Board and its Sub-Committees, reflecting Falmouth’s commitment to the highest standards of governance.
