Join Nottingham Trent Students’ Union as an External Trustee and help deliver its new strategy for over 36,000 students.
Applications close at 9 a.m. Monday 8th June.
Time commitment: Approximately 1 day per month.
About the organisation
Nottingham Trent Students’ Union (NTSU) is seeking an External Trustee to join its Board and support the organisation through its next phase of development as they launch a new five-year strategy.
NTSU is an independent, not-for-profit charity and the official representative body for over 36,000 diverse students at Nottingham Trent University, driven by a mission to empower students to shape the best possible academic and personal experience, underpinned by values of being student-led, inclusive, supportive, forward-thinking and ambitious.
This is an exciting and rare opportunity to contribute to a large, dynamic and values-led students’ union with significant reach across representation, advice, commercial services, events and campus life. NTSU has recently undertaken a substantial review of its democratic structures, placing students at the centre and creating a more agile, inclusive and accessible model of student voice.
From the start of the 2026 academic year, NTSU will commence a new strategy, aligned with the University’s strategic cycle, to enable stronger partnership working and create greater impact for students across their academic and wider experience. The strategy focuses on building communities where every student feels they belong, has the power to shape their experience, and can access the opportunities and support they need to thrive.
About the role
As an External Trustee, you will play an important role in ensuring NTSU is well governed, financially sustainable and legally compliant, contributing to an organisation that delivers impact at scale for its members. We are particularly interested in individuals bringing senior-level experience in charity governance, charity law or commercial leadership, including NTU alumni who have progressed into leadership roles and are keen to give back to the student community.
Who we are looking for
We are seeking an individual who shares NTSU’s commitment to supporting and empowering students. You may bring experience in charity governance, charity law, commercial leadership or a related field, with the ability to apply this at board level. Comfortable operating strategically, you will offer constructive challenge while acting as a trusted critical friend to the executive. You will also be open to supporting, mentoring and empowering developing leaders, including elected student officers. A strong connection to Nottingham and the NTU community would be advantageous, particularly for those able to engage in person and build relationships with key stakeholders. Above all, you will demonstrate sound judgement, integrity and a collaborative approach, balancing support and challenge as part of a values-led, high-performing Board.
Applications for this role close at 9 a.m. Monday 8th June.
